Tummy Time!

I've been getting some pretty good tummy time lately.  My Mom and Dad put me on the boppy pillow every so often.  My Dad snapped some photos on Friday afternoon.  My balance isn't the greatest, but I'm getting the hang of it!

Just takin' a break.  This is exhausting!

Giving my Dad the stink-eye.

This is my Dad's favorite picture.

Bath Time!

Last Tuesday night, I had the third bath of my entire life.  I had one in the hospital, then one at home about a week ago.  Now, I've got the third notch in my belt.

Everytime I've taken a bath, my Mom and Dad have had to wipe down the walls.  You would think they would learn to cover me up when there's warm water around!

Mom posted some photos from my latest bath in an earlier post.  Here are some more!

I love you for reading this blog.

A little privacy please?

I'm gonna out-grow this little gray tub very soon!

I am lovin' this bath!

What's up, Doc?

Hello!  This week Coen is already 3 weeks old.  We keep talking about how fast the time is going and worrying that before we know it, he'll be learning to drive.
Today was Coen's first Well-Baby check and he's doing great.  After measuring his head and checking his weight and length, we learned he is in the 50th percentile in everything.  Matt was just relieved that he didn't have a gigantic head!  Coen now weighs 8.82 pounds and is growing so fast.  When the nurse was measuring him, we were shocked to learn that he has grown 2 inches in the past 2 weeks.  Either we're going to have a future NBA player in the house, or the hospital didn't quite measure him correctly the day he was born.  He is now 21 inches long!

We feel so blessed that Coen is a happy and healthy baby.  He's dealing with a stuffy nose right now which has led to him snoring and has also turned him into quite a noisy little eater!  We describe it as sounding like either a squeaky swing or even a flock of geese.  The doctor says his stuffy nose is normal, and had us get some saline solution to squirt up his nose.  Then we use a little suction device.  Since he can't clear his nose/throat, we do it for him.

We're thankful God has blessed us with such a sweet (and healthy!) little boy.

Back at It

Wow -- reading Kelly's post sounds like a horror story!
She should've stayed home with me... she would've seen some horrifiying things!

Things are slowly getting back to normal.  Thankfully, I am now able to eat solid foods.  When you're sick you realize you take for granted the good things in life:  burgers, fries, more fries...

I miss Coen a lot.  I feel like I know him so well already.  When talking on the phone with Kelly today, I heard him in the background making mouth noises.  I asked Kelly, "Is he feeding?"  The answer was yes.  He makes these noises all the time while he's eating.  It's like he's so excited to eat that he hyperventilates while he's taking it all in.  Such a cutie.  Those are the noises that can be somewhat irritating at 3AM, but absolutely adorable at 3PM.

Speaking of how excited he is to feed, here are a few pictures we captured from a very humorous moment.

Greetings from Lincoln... Again...

Greetings from Lincoln!  Yes, Lincoln.  Yesterday was an interesting day for the Schick family.

It actually started the night before when Steve went outside.  He wasn't tied up, but usually does fine that way.  There is another German Shorthair a couple of houses down from us, and the two of them love playing around in the backyard.

Steve and his friend, Rush
Unfortunately, they must have been playing a bit rough that night and Steve came to the door unable to walk on that leg.  We expected it to get better as the night progressed, but he absolutely refused to put weight on it and would cry in pain when he was trying to lay down and get comfortable.

Then, in the middle of the night Matt woke up not feeling well and ended up with the stomach flu.  I was concerned about Coen.  He certainly doesn't need two sick parents right now!

At about 6 yesterday morning, we decided that I should come to Lincoln for some help since Steve was going to need to get to a vet, and Matt was going to be completely out of commission.

As I got ready to get on the interstate, they re-directed traffic to another highway due to an accident.  Traffic was barely moving and the ride that should have taken an hour took a little more than two.

My mom met me at the vet and stayed in the car with Coen while I dealt with Steve and finally later that morning Coen and I made it to my dad and Jodell's.  I received a call from the vet about Steve and she didn't have good news.  He tore his ACL but due to the issues he already has with his hip, they weren't sure that surgery would be an option.  At one point she mentioned that putting him to sleep might have to be discussed.  The bad news actually didn't end there and the day just couldn't have been worse.

Thankfully today is a new day!!!  Coen is happy and Steve is hobbling around this morning, but doesn't appear to be in any pain.

Matt is feeling better and is back at work today.  Coen and I really miss him.

Hopefully one of the worst days is behind us.  Matt and I wondered last night what God was teaching us, or trying to get our attention about.   We both feel like we forget to rely on Him and try to do everything ourselves.  Yesterday taught us that we just can't.  We are powerless  but we have a relationship with a God who thankfully, is not.  I pray that we continue to trust in Him as we desire to raise our son to love Him and trust Him as well.

Thanks for reading.  Talk to you soon!

Coen Gets His Name in the Paper

Tom Shatel is a local columnist who writes for the Omaha World Herald.  Tom contacted me last week to get some information on the newest Schicklet.  He promised to include it in his Tuesday column, and he delivered.

Here is a snippet:

Congrats to proud papa Matt Schick (and wife Kelly) on the birth of Coen Matthew on Oct. 28. Coen is 19.5 inches and seven pounds, four ounces. Matt was kind enough to provide some of his son’s bio information:

Throws: Right. Bats: Right. Cry: All night. 40 time: 4.41 weeks. Bench: He can lay on one. Vertical Leap: 0.0. Class: 2028.

May Coen grow up with his old man’s wicked sense of humor. And may Matt not let his son grow up to be a fan of any team, pro or college, that has a buffalo on its helmet.

My Second Week

Greetings from the Schick house!

This is Kelly writing, so I've chosen the red font.  I can't believe this is already our second week home with Coen.  We are beginning to adjust to our new life and we couldn't be happier.  Coen is such a sweet little guy and we are enjoying each and every moment with him.

Last Thursday Coen had his first doctor's appointment.    It got off to a rough start when  they took off his diaper and he peed all over the table.  I realized then that I forgot to bring the diaper bag with us, so Coen had to wear a diaper from the office that was quite large.  Hopefully that's the last time I'll forget such an important item.  The appointment went well and he is already back to birth weight.  We figured he would be a good eater like his daddy!

Friday was another big day for the little man as he was in-studio with his daddy in the morning for the last segment of "Schick and Nick."  Coen looked a little bored, but he still made his appearance on the webcam.

Today has been a great day in the Schick house.  Coen has been awake for much of the day and we have enjoyed playing and talking with him.  It was also a beautiful day outside and we strapped Coen in his Baby Bjorn and went for a short walk down the street and back.  Coen managed to fall asleep shortly before the walk began, so he missed the whole thing.

We continue to be amazed at this gift that we've been given and despite a tough first week, I can't believe how much I love this little boy already.  Matt has been so good with Coen and I'm so grateful that we made the decision for him to stay in radio this past summer.  It just wouldn't be fair for him to be away from this sweet face all day!

Thanks for reading!  We'll check-in soon.

Hanging Out on a Sunday

I guess I'm supposed to be a bear.

Look at my bear feet!  And no, I'm not flipping you off.  I just do this sometimes.

Why does Coen look concerned?

That's why.

My First Halloween

Taking a nap on Dad's chest.  It's a family tradition.

At work with Dad and his radio co-host Nick.  This is boring.

Hanging with "The Schick and Nick Show."

All bundled up!

Welcome to our Blog!

With friends and relatives spread out all over the country, we thought it would be smart to use the Internet to connect you with our family.  It's too bad that we all can't live in the same city.  But Al Gore's invention will make us feel a little closer.

Coen Matthew Schick was born October 28th.  He's been living in the outside world for about ten days now.  We can't believe the time has gone by so fast.  Before you know it he'll be asking us if he can borrow our car.  At which point we'll
say, "Coen, you're 38 years old.  It's time
for you to move out."

On this blog we'll post some videos, pictures and journal-type entries as a way to not only stay connected with you, but to document the happenings of our little family.

Here goes nothin'!
